Diplomate Bio

Richard W. Panek is a native of Chicago and attended the Marquette University School of Dentistry in Milwaukee graduating in 1985. He went on to complete a residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago in 1989.

Rich is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery as well as the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry. He is the managing partner of a 5 surgeon private practice in Grand Rapids. In addition to his office practice, Rich is an active member of the medical staff at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s, and Spectrum Health Butterworth, Blodgett, and DeVos Children’s Hospitals in Grand Rapids. His hospital work involves management of maxillofacial trauma as well as major odontogenic infections. His hospital experience treating infection patients has driven him to advocate for access to care as well as integration of oral health care providers in clinically integrated medical networks.

Rich is past president of the Michigan Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (MSOMS). He has served as Chief of the Division of Dentistry/Oral & Maxillofacial surgery for Spectrum Health Hospitals as well as 2 terms as board member of the West Michigan Dental Foundation and 8 years as a member of the MSOMS Exam Review committee. While on the committee, he served as an examiner and oversaw the revision and maintenance of the State OMS specialty licensing examination.

He is currently Secretary/Treasurer of the MSOMS and represents the State of Michigan as a Delegate to the House of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. Rich also represents the State of Michigan on the WPS Medicare Clinical Advisory Committee for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He is a member of the AAOMS Commission on Professional Conduct and is also Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Detroit Mercy Dental School, Department  of Clinical Dentistry in the division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
