Passed the licensing exam in June of 1973.  Practiced in private practice in the mother lode area in Calaveras county.

1974 - 1975 Assistant Clinical Professor in Prosthetics, UCSF.  Lectured in removable prosthetics and clinical instructor in the denture department.  I left UCSF to open a private practice in Stockton, CA.

1975 opened my office on Robinhood Dr. in October of 1975. Began a general practice with emphasis on preventive dentistry, full mouth reconstruction, TMD, TMJ. and prosthetics. Continuous 40+ hours per week private practice 1975 to present in Stockton. In 1977 I incorporated and operated under the corporation Douglas M. Martin DDS. Inc. until forming a partnership with my son.

From 1977 to 1984 I took over 300 hours of Continuing Education on TMD/TMJ from every source I could find on the subject.  Then in 1984 I experienced Orthodontics and orthognathic surgery to correct a severe TMD problem I experienced myself.  In 1986, after two years of dental treatment and thirty thousand dollars spent, the problem returned.  I found that one chiropratic treatment cured 30 years of severe TMD problems.   After that I partnered with a good chiropractor, and we successfully treated to a good resolution over 1700 patients from 1986 to 2007 when he retired. Well over 80 patients a year.

In 2005 my son Dr. Dax Martin and I created a Corporation, Martin Dentistry of which I am now an employee.

I  have taken and taught numerous dental hypnosis courses in the 1970’s to 90’s.  We used hypnosis to treat dental phobia and for general well being of patients up to the 1990s.  The state of California mandated all hypnosis be video/audio taped to insure that false memories were not placed in patients.  The rash of false memories caused chaos and havoc in the Medical dental community and the use of Hypnosis became unusual. We moved to IV Sedation exclusively to treat dental phobia.

for three years on a variety of subjects of interest. Including periodontics, preventive dentistry, dental political issues, practice management, children's health.

Enrolled in Quest a practice management advanced program for dentists and met Dr. Carl Misch who introduced me to implants in the summer of 1983.

Dr. Larry Lum and I co-produced a course in implants in San Francisco in the spring of 1984.

Began doing implants in 1984 to solve complex restorative problems for a relatively poor blue collar community. We have to deal with limited budgets and find solutions to complex needs in an affordable way.

Joined the AAID IN 1984.

Joined the ICOI in 1990.

I became a Fellow of the AAID, ICOI.

1984 =87 Greater than ten courses specific to subperiosteal implants taught by Dr. Bob James head of the department of Implantology at Loma Linda University.  One specifically on the results Dr. James human histology and its implications in implant design.  A course in the engineering of Custom Implants with respect to skeletal tissue mechanics specific to the problems of the honeycomb structure of the maxilla and the atrophic mandible.

I completed a 5 weekend course in custom implants by Dr. Tom Golec in 1984. This was a paradigm shift to osseous integration of custom implants from soft tissue integration.

1986 The Tatum institute in Sinus grafting, Tatum Frames and D series implants in 1988.

Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry in 1991.

1991 Fellow American Academy of Implant Dentistry.   1997 Fellow of the ICOI a position which is primarily a purchased diploma.

I have attended all but four AAID national meeting since 1984. At these meetings I attend 24 or more hours of implant related courses. I attended all but four of the Western district meetings 16 to 24 hours of credit, since becoming a member in 1984. The list of subject matter includes almost every aspect of oral implantology in these meetings.  Until 2009 when the economy collapsed under Obama.

I am a member of an implantology blog which I have written over 1700 posts and received over 9000 thousand posts by implantologists from all over the world.

I have taught in 3 AAID Maxi courses in California and Nevada in implantology to dentists with Dr. Lum, I have taught courses with Dr. Osier in California. before 2000.

I have been involved with research at the UAB department of bio-materials with Dr. Jack Lemons since 1995. I have harvested mandibles of four humans. We are investigating custom osseous integrated implants. Some of our results were published at the International Academy of Dental Research. This work has yet to be published as we are waiting the fifth mandible for statistical validity reasons.

I have lectured on custom osseous integrated implants/custom endosteal implants over the years to general dentists and specialists.  We published a Nanostudy of the bone implant interface of human Custom Osseous Integrated Implants in a dental materials research journal. I am co-author with two other researchers.  We published a study at the National Institute of Dental Research on integration of custom cast implants.

I have been trained in and used the following implant systems. Bicon, Quantum, OCO biomedical implants. Calcitek implants. Denar Implants. Corevent Implants. Tatum D series implants. Roberts RA-2 and RA-3 ramus frames. Roberts STR. Roberts Ramus Blades. Custom implants of various types and forms, including Custom Endosteal plate form, root form as well as strut form implants. We currently use all these systems where indicated.

I am a limited partner in Quantum Implants.

I manufacture certain implants for my own use for selected patients who need a custom implant system, as well as using custom implant laboratories.

Since 1983 I have successfully treated over 3000 patients by placing the implants and then restoring them, with a large variety of implants.  We currently use a multimodal approach to implantology all of which we use successfully with expectations of long term survival until death of the patients.  Since 1993 my practice is limited to full mouth reconstruction of terminal dentition cases with dentures and implants, and general implantology where we do all phases of surgery and restoration of dentures and implants and implant born prosthesis.

I have done several video productions on placement of Custom Implants in two venues.

I continuing to lecture and teach clinical implantology.  I have been Keynote speaker in several venues including ISOI  in Pune India.  Have lectured and taught for several years with the Academy of Implants and Transplants, University of South Alabama, the Alabama implant study club, and other venues.  My area of teaching are Custom Implants all aspects.

In addition I lecture on long term survival of implants and teeth and for years have emphasized the oral systemic connection.

28 hours of education in the use of Ozone in dentistry from Dr. Bill Domb and 14 hours from Dr. Schallenburger/Menendez on the use of Ozone in Medicine.  We have ozone generators in our office and use it as another medicine for implants and dental treatment.

Currently, in addition to my practice of dentistry I am doing in office research on elderly patients who do not have chronic diseases.  We are surveying those patients and relating them to oral spirochetes.  We use research grade Nikon phase contrast microscopy to evaluate the presence of oral spirochetes noting the correlation of oral spirochetes to heart disease, diabetes and alzheimer’s.  We have studied over 110 aged without chronic illnesses over the last 6 years.  We have done evaluations of over 1900 patients for oral spirochetes.

The State of California requires 50 hours of Continuing Education to maintain licensure in a two year period.  I routinely do over 100 hours in C.E. in a variety of dental subject matter and have had to since licensed in 1973.

Awarded a Master of the Academy of Implants and Transplants in 2013.

2016 lectured on Custom Osseous integrated implants and electrosurgery to American Dental Society of Europe.

I surgically place and restore over 600 implants per year in our practice in Stockton.
