The ABOI Board Certification examination is comprised of two sections. The first section is a written examination and the second section consists of case presentations and case defense.
The examination is comprehensive, covering topics such as collecting and assessing patient data, preparing and presenting a patient treatment plan, implementing patient treatment, and maintaining the effectiveness of the dental implant treatment.
The ABOI measures the in-depth knowledge, proficient skills, and abilities of practitioners to provide comprehensive, safe and effective oral implant care for the public.
Candidates must pass the Part I written examination prior to taking the Part II case presentation portion of the examination.

Part I of the application is available for electronic submission. Some required supporting documents must be mailed or faxed to the ABOI.
For Part I, the ABOI has developed routes by which candidates can apply for Diplomate status. Each route is explained below. Please keep in mind while reviewing these routes that you must meet the all of the criteria listed in that route. If you are not sure or have additional questions, please contact the ABOI.
Route 1
- You are a graduate of a Full Time post doctoral program in Oral Implantology
- The program must have been a minimum of 2 years in length
- The program is Accredited or approved by either the Commission on Dental
Accreditation or JCAHO
- You have completed 10 arches of implant treatment and the implants have been restored for a minimum of 1 year
Route 2
- You are a Board Certified dental specialist and a graduate of a full time advanced educational program (minimum of 2 years) in the following specialties:
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Periodontics
- Prosthodontics
- You have completed a minimum of ten (10) arches of implant treatment and the cases have been restored for at least one (1) year
*If you qualify under either Route 1 or 2, you are exempt from the Part I written examination of the ABOI Board certification.
Route 3
- You have completed a full time advanced education program (minimum of two (2) years in:
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Periodontics
- Prosthodontics
(If you are board certified in any of these specialties- GO BACK and apply through Route 2)
- You have completed a minimum of ten (10) arches of implant treatment and the cases have been restored for at least one (1) year
Route 4
- You are a general dentist, or dental specialist not listed in Routes 1, 2 or 3 and ONE of the following:
- Diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry
- Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists
- Associate Fellow in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry
- Member of the Academy of General Dentistry at the level of Fellowship or Mastership
- Fellow of the Academy of Osseointegration
- You attended a General Practice Residency program in the United States
In addition to that you also:
- Have a minimum of six (6) years of clinical practice experience in Implant Dentistry
- Completed ten (10) arches of implant treatment with cases being restored for at least one (1) year
- Possess a minimum of 570 hours of Continuing Dental Education hours or Continuing Medical Education hours that are specific to implant dentistry
Additional information related to Continuing education hours:
300 hours of the 570 of continuing education hours must be part of a continuum of training in implant dentistry. The 300 hour requirement may be met by combining hours from multiple continuums each containing a minimum of 60 hours of instruction.
For the purpose of the application, the ABOI/ID defines a continuum as a series of implant specific CE courses given by the same sponsor which are in aggregate a minimum of 60 hours in duration.
The continuing education programs submitted must be recognized by one of the following continuing education providers and must be one of the following: ADA CERP, AGD PACE, ACCME or State recognized CME provider.
The other 270 hours of continuing education must be implant related in nature including but not limited to the following examples:

Route 5
- You are currently a post-doctoral student registered in
- A full time program (3 years minimum) in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Periodontics or Prosthodontics
- You are currently in your LAST year of the program
- You can provide a letter from your program dean verifying that:
- You are in your last year
- You are in good standing with your program
- You are likely to graduate at the end of the final semester or term of the program
